Glass Boxes, 2024
This photographic series draws its visual inspiration from the circus, which, historically, has provided refuge to individuals who do not conform to the norms of conventional society. It explores the experience of attempting to fit into a predefined mold in order to assimilate seamlessly into mainstream society. In a world where others make daily living appear effortless, some individuals grapple with the societal structure and feel compelled to conceal their true selves, donning masks and staging a performance to navigate through life.
Staged performances of the self in these images serve as metaphors for the social and visual performances many people feel they need to enact in order to be accepted – to fit unremarkably into each social context that might present itself.
Their efforts to project an illusion of flawlessness often hang by the thinnest thread, easily shattered by even the slightest disruption. The images in this series serve as symbolic representations of the inner conflicts associated with identity and belonging.
